Mechanicsburg - Harrisburg Area
Located just 8 miles west of Harrisburg, PA is Mechanicsburg, a borough in eastern Cumberland County within the agricultural region of Cumberland Valley. Bordering townships include Silver Spring, Monroe, Upper Allen, and Hampden. The Mechanicsburg area was first settled in 1806, Mechanicsburg would not become incorporated until 22 years later.
During the early part of the Civil War, Mechanicsburg was the location of a military recruitement center for volunteers who trained trained at nearby Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, which was the largest Federal camp during the Civil War. The operation was initiated by President Abraham Lincoln who called for 75,000 volunteers after receiving word of the raid and surrender of Fort Sumter. Four days later, training grounds would be offered up by officials of Dauhpin County, and Camp Curtin was established. Soldiers of Camp Curtin would fight in several early battles including the Battle of Williamsport. Mechanicsburg would be seized by Confederate troops for two days during the Gettysburg battles.
